Synopsis

The party, having gained control of the Siberian accord base, debates how to end the accord threat once and for all. They consider:

  • Negotiating with the Accord
  • Destroying the Lunar Alliance because we suspect they may be the origin of the Accord
  • Destroying the Alpha Centauri imperialists.
  • Somehow sabotaging or preventing access to the development of time travel technology.

Once again we interogate one of the accord "human computers". We learn:

  • Michael Decker's Presence destroyed the Vau. It created terrible mental "noise".
  • By their understanding contact with Decker was made in 2995.
  • There was an unknown contact with an entity presumed to be Decker in 2771. The threat was eliminated (we believe this to be the missile strike on the quantum anchor ship).

Mme. Cosmo in the psychic host body of Dimitri connects to the shared consciousness of the "human computer". She sees a vision of the Vau homeworld (likely a future Earth) with fungal agriculture. Everyone there is industrious and the landscape seems serene.

She also learns that there was an attempt to recolonize earth by the Lunar Alliance in the 2700s. That colonization attempt also disrupted the serenity of the Vau. The mental noise became so painful to them that they developed the technology of projecting their minds and used it to destroy the Lunar Alliance by crashing their own ships at high speed into their cities.

When their peace was disturbed a second time by the hyperspace traveling crew from A.C. they decided that this was not a single fluke occurrence and that they needed to understand and master the technology to truly end the threat once and for all. There was a synergy between their ability to project their minds into others and the accidental time-travel the A.C. imperialists had developed by traveling faster than the speed of light within an inertial frame of reference. It allowed them to project their minds through time.

With all this new information the party decides to make their play in 2995 just as the initial Alpha Centauri team arrives in the hope of using the specialized psychic-dampening helmets (that were used previously to protect Patrick's Fiancee from possession by an Accord agent) to avoid creating so much mental noise at first contact and using the opportunity to negotiate with them.

Unfortunately at this point Grisha wished to remain in his own time and body (with his new invisibility superpower) so the party bid him their final farewell.

Decker carefully calibrates the coordinates and jumps forward with two others. The initial ship only had a crew of three so there are only three bodies to inhabit. This advance guard easily takes control of the ship, re-routes it to an orbit far from earth, and raises two mindless quick-grow clones for the other party members to project their minds forward into.

An initial survey of the solar system shows no sign of the Lunar Alliance and no radio communications. Radio hails are not returned from the Earth or the Moon.

Meanwhile Mme. Cosmo builds the psychic-dampening helmets as well as a psychic transmitter for the ship for communication with the Accord. As soon as the other party members arrive she activates the the projector and makes a hail. "Greetings hive mother one. You're too far from home. Come back." comes the reply.

Decker, somewhat concerned that Albert and others might side with the Accord against Alpha Centauri, covertly sends a message home advising them of the situation, warning them of the time travel threat, and providing the designs for the psychic-dampening helmets.

Now all together again the party moves further in to the solar system and makes a landing not too far from the termite-mound shaped Accord Hive City. They have their first view of the physical form of the Accord members. They are a symbiotic joining of humans and the spider-like night stalkers. Each atrophied human is psychically linked to the "bearer" upon which it rides and simultaneously linked to all other members of the hive.

Mme. Cosmo makes the first attempt to negotiate with the hive by removing her helmet. They are overjoyed at her return and they immediately recognize her as their progenitor, the very first human to psychically interface-with and domesticate a night stalker. They are concerned that she has lost her "bearer", but they quickly supply her with a new one and go about reintegrating her into the hive.

Meanwhile the other party members are creepy because they are not a type of known animal and there is a psychic null zone where their mind should be because of the helmets. There is some deliberation by the hive with the initial notion that we are unknown, but probably pose a threat to the crops and should therefore be destroyed.

The party comes together to demonstrate their intelligence as well as removing the helmets and allowing them to begin to understand us. Mme. Cosmo also intercedes on our behalf and the negotiation is successful. With some mutual understanding and the help of the helmets there is no longer a need for the two civilizations to war with one another.

Epilogue

The party members choose to either remain in this time or return to an earlier time. Their choices and fates follow.

  • Decker: Returns to his own time and ensures that his research and engineering on faster-than-light travel is completed successfully.
  • Albert: Returns to 18th century France. However history now records that the Paris Commune, immediately militarily struck down Adolphe Thiers's government in Versailles when they had the opportunity and the proto-socialist French Commune stood for a generation as an early positive example of a state acting as a true commonwealth.
  • Patrick: Returns to his own time, marries the lovely Lady Gwendolyn in Rome, and establishes a secret society to protect the world from time travelers.
  • Mme. Cosmo: Remains and rejoins her hive.
  • Damianus: Returns to his own time and plants books with important ideas about humanism, environmental stewardship, etc in locations where he knows they will survive to influence future generations.
  • Grisha: Remained in his own time without coming to the hive. He hunted down many of the Accord-engineered superwolves released into the environment by the party before finally being slain by one.
